Although hands are often stuffed into gloves in winter, in colder months, applying color to your fingertips can instantly boost your mood-and actually help keep your nails healthy. “[In winter] heat is needed to keep warm, which means drier air and negative effects on nails,” said LeChat nail art educator Anastasia Totty. “This is why we see more cuticle breakage and dryness, and why I recommend regular manicure.” Yes, certain colors are synonymous with winter, such as festive red, deep moody shades and glitter. But brown nail polish quickly became the leader of the season. The choices of espresso, chocolate, cinnamon and mocha proved how versatile nail colors are.
“Brown is the new black,” said celebrity manicurist Vanessa Sanchez McCullough. “It’s chic and sophisticated, and it’s perfect for those who want to wear eye-catching warm colors, but feel softer.”
There are many brown nail polishes to choose from, but if you want to brighten your skin tone, celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann recommends that you look for a base color. “Warm skin tones with yellow undertones should choose browns with warm tones, such as tan (orange brown) and caramel,” she said. Cool colors with red undertones should be taupe, hickory, and coffee brown. For neutral skin tones (mixed yellow or red undertones), choose walnut, gingerbread, and chocolate brown.

An ode to Boba lovers, milk tea brown looks great on light to medium skin tones. To prevent this color from looking too dull, Brittney Boyce, a celebrity nail artist and founder of NAILS OF LA, recommends applying a top coat every two to three days and always using cuticle oil to keep the nails hydrated.
Chocolate brown is the perfect calming and undertone in winter. According to Sanchez McCullough, it goes well with any skin tone because it is a fairly neutral hue. Totty also recommends chocolate brown for the classic oval or square nail shape.
Perfect for medium to dark skin tones, the charcoal brown shaky between brown and almost black-the perfect contrast for this season. Boyce recommends matching this color with oval or almond nails or ballerina-shaped nails for a more dramatic look.
With almost no red undertones, Mocha Brown looks great on light and dark skin tones. “For light skin, the contrast is very significant,” Boyce said. “Dark skinned nudes complement their skin tones.” Since dark nail polish makes smaller fingers look shorter, Emily H. Rudman, founder of Emilie Heath, recommends applying it on longer nails Mocha brown to help stretch the fingers.
According to the celebrity manicurist Elle, espresso is very suitable for fair to olive skin because the subtle rust undertone will not read black on the nails. If you are looking for a way to change the appearance of brown, Sanchez McCullough recommends different finishes. “Try using a matte finish on the gem-toned brown to get a completely different look,” the expert said.
Rudman recommends burgundy brown, a dark brown-red hue, to those who are trying brown for the first time. “This nail color is suitable for any nail shape, but the pointed almond outline will bring this color into the vampire’s realm, which is very suitable for autumn and winter,” Rudman told TZR.
“Cinnamon brown nail polish needs a longer length and darker skin tone so that you can appreciate the beautiful contrast,” Totti said. When using this, make sure to wrap your nails (painted along the top edge) to help keep the manicure from chipping and ensure longer wear and tear.
Taupe caramel brown is the perfect combination between drama and subtlety, with its creamy finish. The color looks great on medium to dark skin tones and cooler undertones. And because it will be obvious when dark manicure is cut off, Rudman recommends using a long-lasting top coat to base your nail polish.
If you prefer purple undertones, eggplant is definitely your color. According to Totty, eggplant brown looks great on nails of any length, but it’s best to pair it with a super shiny finish to make it look deeper and darker. And because nails are drier and fragile in the cold, Boyce recommends using moisturizing lotions and filing nails frequently to prevent hooking and breaking. Oh, don’t forget the cuticle oil!
Terracotta is a brown-orange hue that looks great on olive skin tones because it contrasts a bit with hints of orange. Boyce recommends terracotta reddish undertones as the overall color or accent color on transparent nails.
